The Same Circle

Rowena is pacing the hallway,

room to room, meowing at empty corners.

Every time she looks back at me,

she's calling me out on how quiet the house is.

When you're here, you love all over her,

talking sweet,

then you look at me, smile,

and reach out to pet my shoulder the exact same way.

Just like that, we’re all good.

The dishes are still sitting in the sink.

I didn't bother with them.

Loading the dishwasher alone just makes the kitchen feel too big.

Now she's parked on the arm of the couch,

eyes locked on the front door.

Just the two of us sitting here,

waiting on your key in the lock.
